Historical Archive of the Province of Santo Evangelio of Mexico

The Historical Archive of the Province of Santo Evangelio of Mexico (AHPSEM) holds documents that originated in this Franciscan province. The archive was formed with the set of manuscript documents that were scattered in the old convents of the Province. Thanks to the efforts of Friar Domingo Díaz those documents were deposited in the Provincial Curia. During the 1980s, Friar Luis Soto attempted the first effort to organize the documents. Due to issues of access, Friar Francisco Morales Valerio, obtained permission from the Provincial Minister, Friar Manuel Anaut, to transfer these documents to the Franciscan Library within the Convent of San Gabriel Cholula. In order to preserve and promote its use, an agreement was signed on January 3rd of 2017 by the Province of Santo Evangelio of Mexico and the University of the Americas Puebla, which made the Archive an official part of the university’s Library Administration Office.

The archive consists of 320 boxes of manuscripts from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The content is very diverse, with a sizable part that is related to the organization of the Province of Santo Evangelio at the time of the viceroyalty and of independent Mexico as well as documents from the Province of San Diego and the Propaganda Fide colleges.

The archive is accessible for consultation, research and dissemination by national and international researchers.
